‘as fun and as fantastical as the original’
‘a lovely sense of humour that filters through the performance’
‘an irresistibly charming tale told with refreshing simplicity’
A bona fide children’s classic, The Gruffalo returns once again to the West End for a limited summer season. Tall Stories’ winsome adaptation brings Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s book to life in glorious technicolour. Catch it when it comes a-prowling into London’s Lyric Theatre from July 3rd.
A staple of children’s bookcases everywhere, The Gruffalo is the tale of brave Mouse, who sets off on an intrepid adventure through the vast, dark forest. This is no walk in the park, but a hazardous journey which sees our hero bump into all sorts of peckish predators. A sneaky fox, a slithering snake and an eccentric owl all notice Mouse and quite fancy her as an afternoon snack. Luckily Mouse has plenty of cunning and quick wit up her sleeve, and she soon lands on a plan to outsmart the hungry animals; she tells them all there is to know about the fearsome Gruffalo who lives in the woods…
The book has previously been made into a BBC film featuring the voices of Helena Bonham-Carter, James Corden and Robbie Coltrane. Tall Stories’ adaptation has enjoyed countless successful runs at the Lyric Theatre and has been described by Time Out as being, “as fun and fantastical as the original”.
Chock-full of fun, physical theatre, silliness and interactive songs, this is live family entertainment at its best. Thanks to its 55 minute running time, it’s perfect for short attention spans and a fitting way to introduce young children to theatre. The Gruffalo is guaranteed to be another delightful summer hit at the Lyric Theatre!
