Get Up, Stand Up lyrics

What are the words to Bob Marley’s iconic song?

Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical is coming to the Lyric Theatre in October, featuring a wealth of hits from Marley’s amazing back catalogue. One of the biggest, of course, is the song that gives the musical its title; Get Up, Stand Up. With the track soon to be immortalised even further, we felt it is a good time to look at the Get Up Stand Up lyrics to see if they give any insight into why this particular tune was chosen as the title record for the musical.

Music history tells us that Marley and fellow-Wailer Peter Tosh were inspired by their upbringing in Jamaica to write Get Up, Stand Up. The pair felt that they had to stand up and fight for the respect of their Rastafarian religion, a faith for which Marley is one of the best-known spokespeople. Looking at the lyrics below, the strong religious message is clear to see.

The lyrics to Get Up, Stand Up, written by Bob Marley and Peter Tosh

Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: don’t give up the fight!

Preacherman, don’t tell me,
Heaven is under the earth.
I know you don’t know
What life is really worth.
It’s not all that glitters is gold;
Half the story has never been told:
So now you see the light, eh!
Stand up for your rights. Come on!

Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: don’t give up the fight!
Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: don’t give up the fight!

Most people think,
Great God will come from the skies,
Take away everything
And make everybody feel high.
But if you know what life is worth,
You will look for yours on earth:
And now you see the light,
You stand up for your rights. Jah!

Get up, stand up! (Jah, Jah!)
Stand up for your rights! (Oh-hoo!)
Get up, stand up! (Get up, stand up!)
Don’t give up the fight! (Life is your right!)
Get up, stand up! (So we can’t give up the fight!)
Stand up for your rights! (Lord, Lord!)
Get up, stand up! (Keep on struggling on!)
Don’t give up the fight! (Yeah!)

We sick an’ tired of-a your ism-skism game –
Dying and going to heaven in Jesus’ name, Lord.
We know when we understand:
Almighty God is a living man.
You can fool some people sometimes,
But you can’t fool all the people all the time.
So now we see the light (What you gonna do?),
We gonna stand up for our rights! (Yeah, yeah, yeah!)

So you better:
Get up, stand up! (In the morning! Git it up!)
Stand up for your rights! (Stand up for our rights!)
Get up, stand up!
Don’t give up the fight! (Don’t give it up, don’t give it up!)
Get up, stand up! (Get up, stand up!)
Stand up for your rights! (Get up, stand up!)
Get up, stand up!
Don’t give up the fight! (Get up, stand up!)
Get up, stand up!
Stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up!
Don’t give up the fight!

It’s clear that Bob Marley’s Rastafarian faith was incredibly important to him and he certainly fought to have his beliefs respected around the world. His music brought awareness not only to his religion, but also his social and political ideologies, such as unity and freedom amongst the people of Africa. While exact plot details have not yet been released, we can expect the Get Up, Stand Up musical to delve into the beliefs and philosophies of Bob Marley as it charts his career.
