A Guide to Social Distancing for SIX at the Lyric Theatre

After a long year, we couldn’t be more excited to Get Down to the West End when SIX the musical transfers to the Lyric Theatre London for 11 weeks of COVID-secure performances. But as Anne Boleyn, Catherine Parr and company prepare to welcome audiences back in December, we know there are lots of questions about how exactly a socially distanced trip to the theatre will work.

The Lyric Theatre has been working hard to introduce measures that ensure you can return to the West End and #SeeItSafely.

The cast of SIX the musical live on stage
SIX the Musical is one of the first shows to open under social distancing in the West End

There’s a lot to consider, but don’t lose your head! Below, we’ve got information on everything from booking tickets to post-show Test and Trace to make sure your visit is safe, straightforward, and fit for a Queen.

Booking tickets

When booking SIX musical tickets online, an algorithm adjusts availability depending on which seats are selected. The seats around your own will be kept empty in line with COVID-19 social distancing requirements of 1m+.

Audience members are asked to book a maximum of six seats together, and attend only with their household or support bubble as defined in London’s Tier 2 guidance.

You may notice that tickets you selected suddenly become unavailable due to the algorithm. Don’t worry, just pick new seats and you should be able to complete your booking in no time.

After booking, there is a small chance you may be contacted to swap seats. However, this will simply be to ensure all social distancing and safety guidelines are being followed.

The Lyric Theatre will allow ticket exchanges up to 24 hours before your scheduled performance of SIX. If anyone in your party is feeling ill, you can switch to like-for-like tickets at a future performance, subject to availability.

Before your visit

The Lyric Theatre will send a pre-visit email 48 hours before your scheduled performance of SIX, which will include a link to check-in.

During check-in, you’ll need to confirm that no members of your party have COVID-19 symptoms. An e-ticket will then be sent to you within 24 hours. Make sure your tickets are easily accessible on your phone to keep things speedy and safe when you get to the theatre.

Don’t forget your mask! All audience members aged 11+ are required to wear one, subject to health exemptions, before being allowed into the Lyric Theatre.

At the venue

Your SIX the musical e-ticket will include advice on staggered arrival times at the Lyric Theatre. On arrival, you’ll be given a temperature check and asked to keep your mask on for the duration of your visit, apart from when eating or drinking.

An NHS QR code will be clearly visible to scan if you have the NHS Test and Trace app on your phone.

Contactless bag checks will be taking place, but cloakroom storage will not be available. Try to keep any bags and belongings small enough to take into the auditorium – around 40cm x 20cm x 25cm.

If you want a drink or snacks to enjoy during SIX, you can pre-order refreshments to your seat.

Staff will be on-hand to guide you through the theatre and make sure you feel comfortable; they can answer any questions you have on the day. Further measures include floor and wall signage, one-way systems, hand sanitiser stations, and different entry and exit points depending on where you’re sitting.

There are new cleaning protocols in place too: Lyric Theatre staff will be carrying out regular disinfection and the venue will be thoroughly cleaned before every performance of SIX.

After your visit

If any audience members develop symptoms of COVID-19 after attending a performance of SIX, they must follow Government guidance for self-isolating and getting tested. If they test positive, NHS Test and Trace measures will be used to contact other audience members.

Your contact details, such as the email you booked with, will be held by the Lyric Theatre for 21 days after your performance in case you need to be contacted as part of the UK Government Test and Trace scheme.

SIX really is making history as it becomes the first musical to hit the West End after lockdown. Tickets are available to book now.

Peter Andre to guest star in Thriller Live

In perfect time to be a welcome early Christmas gift for Peter Andre fans, it’s been announced that the Australian star will join the cast of Thriller Live for just two weeks between 10th and 22nd December.

Andre is a huge international star, who has been consistently popular since his breakthrough in the 90s with the likes of “Mysterious Girl”. He boasts two Number 1 albums, a host of Number 1 singles and plenty of awards gained during his career, and now has over 6 million followers on social media.

Thriller Live, the musical tribute to Michael Jackson, is running at the Lyric Theatre until 26 April 2020, and after over a decade is still one of the most popular shows in the West End. Various popular names have joined the cast over the years, including Alexandra Burke and Layton Williams, but Peter Andre is perhaps the most widely recognised star to join the ranks of this popular production. He received a standing ovation when he performed during the 4,000th performance of the show last year, and so is sure to be a hit during his limited engagement in December.

Andre will be the first in a series of guest stars appearing over the next few months, before the show moves to a new West End venue. Producers Paul Walden and Derek Nicol have assured audiences that Andre’s two weeks in the show will be  “an unforgettable experience for fans lucky enough to get a ticket.”

If you don’t want to miss out on seeing this huge star in one of London’s biggest shows, then you can see full details and book your tickets here.

Is The Gruffalo at the Lyric Theatre good for kids? Here’s what parents have said

Something big, furry and monstrous has taken up residence in London’s Lyric Theatre. Tall Stories’ production of The Gruffalo, based on the best-selling children’s book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, has turned the Lyric stage into a mysterious forest, and invited kids and grown-ups in to meet its wild inhabitants.

This is not the first time that the Lyric has hosted this production. Of course, the most important question with a show like The Gruffalo is “will kids enjoy this?”

Mother and young son in a theatre audience
Does ‘The Gruffulo’ at the Lyric Theatre delight kids and parents alike?

To answer this question, we have taken a look at what popular parent bloggers have had to say about The Gruffalo in previous runs at The Lyric.

Monica Costa, founder of London Mum’s Magazine, reviewed the 2015 run of The Grufallo and called it:

“an enchanting production with the perfect combination of songs, laughter, physical theatre and just the right amount of scary fun”

Mummy, primary school teacher and blogger Emma Edwards, whose adventures with her son, Adam, form the basis for adventuresandplay.com, saw the The Gruffalo at the Lyric in 2016 and had the following to say:

“The show entertained both Adam and us. There were several pantomime gags and some humour that went over the children’s heads. It was certainly a show to remember and one that we would highly recommend.”

Parenting, travel and style blogger Scandi Mummy also reviewed the 2016 Lyric run and said:

“I highly recommend taking your children to see this show especially if they are already fans of The Gruffalo. The script and ad-libbing by the actors make it highly entertaining for adults as well.”

Mum of twin boys, Kelly, writing for mojomums.co.uk, wrote of the 2017 run at The Lyric:

“My sons were both captivated – sometimes one son in particular can become a little fidgety and bored, but not with this show, he loved it!  The show ran for around an hour, perfect time for little one’s and no toilet stops needed!”

It’s clear that kids love The Gruffalo!

The Gruffalo will be rumbling around the Lyric Theatre until 8th September. See full details and book your tickets here.
